SEGURA DE LA SIERRA
(JAÉN)

Segura de la Sierra is located in the central area of the Sierra de Segura district. It is mainly mountainous territory with forestry plantations, while farm land makes up a mere fifth of the municipal area and with olive trees being the predominant crop. Segura de la Sierra, a large upland area belonging to the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, has a total of 13 inhabited settlements, all of which are very small and situated in magnificent natural surroundings.

The village's economic activity is shaped by the presence of olive groves, livestock, forestry plantations and nursery as well as by tourism, with this last sector perhaps being that which brings in most earnings for local people. The natural and Historical wealth of the village makes Segura de la Sierra a must for all tourists who are game enough to wander into the Natural Park.

Historical Heritage

Castle or Alcazaba

Of Muslim origin, its construction denotes clear Christian remodelling, from the second half of 13th century. In its interior we can find the Parade Ground, the chapel of Santa Ana and the Homage Tower with three floors. It was besieged during the French invasion and was recovered afterwards.

Gates of the walled enclosure

During the Islamic period the town was fortified and a triple enclosure of walls was built. We reach fortification by four doors : that of Catena, that is the one that is best preserved, that of Gontar, that of Mediodía or Orcera and the New Door, that was rebuilt in the 16th c.

Arab Baths

Made up from three longitudinal chambers corresponding to the cold, warm up and hot chambers, with notable spaces at the sides for double a horseshoe arch and a cannon vault with skylights.

Fountain-Pilaster

Monumental fountain erected in 1517, in which Gothic and Renaissance elements are combined. The two-headed coat of arms of emperor Charles V beams down on the Calle central, flanked in the side ones for another two coats of arms. It is crowned with animals and Gothic up part.

Town Hall

Building with Plateresque door from the 16th century, which served as a Jesuit school.

The church of Nuestra Señora of the Collado

It was rebuilt over Romance ruins. The image of the Virgen del Collado is in its interior, made from alabaster, in the Gothic style and the Reclining Christ attributed to the master Gregorio Hernandez.

Back-to-back to the parish church, with layout in the shape of a Latin cross, its abutments and cupola of a spherical cap are made of stone. Its façade is Renaissance.

House of Jorge Manrique

Birthplace of the famous writer, in its façade the coat of arms of the Figueroa family, maternal surname of the poet, can still be seen
