MECINA FONDALES
(ALPUJARRA, GRANADA)

In the slope that descends towards Trevélez, Mecina Fondales is located. Here the old public laundry, which conserves outlines of its modest monumentality, stands out. But the most interesting of this core it has to be looked for in Fondales, where Gerald Brenan chose as his summer residence. A short descent until the river gives the opportunity to contemplate the rest of an old Arab mill, considered in its time like one of the most representative works of the medieval architecture of the area.

Museums and monuments

- Parroquial Church of San Marcos and San Cayetano: In 1536 they worked in the church of Mecina Fondales, that it would possibly be the old building of the mosque consecrated as church. In 1547 land for the new church was bought. In 1564 the interior was decorated with applications of glazed ceramics in the stands, railings, main altar and other altars.

The temple presents a single section of rectangular plant with some lateral chapels and greater chapel differentiated by triumphal arc. The covers are simple modern armours, multicoloured some of them. Attached to the head a tower rises. The walls are crowned with brick eaves and all the outside is whitewashed.
